Regional VIC's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Regional VIC in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (93,984 females or 26.8%)
- Education and Training (46,081 females or 13.1%)
- Retail Trade (40,220 females or 11.5%)
In combination, these three industries employed 180,285 females in total or 51.4% of the total employed female resident population.
In comparison, Greater Hobart employed 25.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 14.5% in Education and Training; and 10.3% in Retail Trade.
The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Regional VIC and Greater Hobart were:
- A larger percentage of females employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (4.5% compared to 1.1%)
- A larger percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (26.8% compared to 25.4%)
- A larger percentage of females employed in manufacturing (4.1% compared to 2.7%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed in public administration and safety (6.3% compared to 10.9%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed females in Regional VIC increased by 54,040 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Regional VIC were for those employed in:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+21,440 females)
- Education and Training (+7,672 females)
- Public Administration and Safety (+3,536 females)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+3,179 females)
