Greater Adelaide's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Greater Adelaide in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Construction (48,714 males or 14.2%)
- Manufacturing (32,350 males or 9.4%)
- Retail Trade (30,065 males or 8.7%)
In combination, these three industries employed 111,129 males in total or 32.3% of the total employed male resident population.
In comparison, Australian Capital Territory employed 11.6% in Construction; 2.4% in Manufacturing; and 6.2% in Retail Trade.
The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Greater Adelaide and Australian Capital Territory were:
- A larger percentage of males employed in manufacturing (9.4% compared to 2.4%)
- A larger percentage of males employed in transport, postal and warehousing (6.5% compared to 3.4%)
- A smaller percentage of males employed in public administration and safety (7.6% compared to 29.1%)
- A smaller percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (7.8% compared to 12.5%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed males in Greater Adelaide increased by 41,100 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Greater Adelaide were for those employed in:
- Construction (+9,095 males)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+6,477 males)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+6,035 males)
- Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+2,994 males)
