Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Greater Darwin in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (7,560 females or 20.7%)
  • Public Administration and Safety (6,673 females or 18.3%)
  • Education and Training (4,612 females or 12.6%)

In combination, these three industries employed 18,845 females in total or 51.7% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Australian Capital Territory employed 17.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 30.5% in Public Administration and Safety; and 12.7% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Greater Darwin and Australian Capital Territory were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (20.7% compared to 17.1%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in accommodation and food services (8.2% compared to 6.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in public administration and safety (18.3% compared to 30.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in professional, scientific and technical services (5.6% compared to 9.3%)

The number of employed females in Greater Darwin increased by 11,712 between 2006 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2006 and 2021 in Greater Darwin were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+4,101 females)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+2,065 females)
  • Education and Training (+1,296 females)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+1,101 females)
