Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Greater Melbourne in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (254,516 females or 21.7%)
  • Education and Training (152,253 females or 13.0%)
  • Retail Trade (125,884 females or 10.7%)

In combination, these three industries employed 532,653 females in total or 45.4% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Australian Capital Territory employed 17.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 12.7% in Education and Training; and 6.7% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Greater Melbourne and Australian Capital Territory were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (21.7% compared to 17.1%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in retail trade (10.7% compared to 6.7%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in manufacturing (4.6% compared to 0.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in public administration and safety (5.6% compared to 30.5%)
