Industry sector of employment

More Regional QLD male residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

Regional QLD's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Regional QLD in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (97,724 males or 16.2%)
  • Manufacturing (47,165 males or 7.8%)
  • Retail Trade (46,046 males or 7.6%)

In combination, these three industries employed 190,935 males in total or 31.6% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Northern Territory employed 13.0% in Construction; 3.3% in Manufacturing; and 6.4% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Regional QLD and Northern Territory were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in manufacturing (7.8% compared to 3.3%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in construction (16.2% compared to 13.0%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (5.7% compared to 2.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in public administration and safety (6.4% compared to 19.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Regional QLD increased by 54,703 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Regional QLD were for those employed in:

  • Construction (+12,532 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+11,674 males)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+4,522 males)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+3,903 males)
