More Greater Brisbane residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Greater Brisbane in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (190,854 people or 15.3%)
  • Education and Training (111,714 people or 9.0%)
  • Retail Trade (111,628 people or 9.0%)

In combination, these three industries employed 414,196 people in total or 33.3% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, New South Wales employed 14.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 8.7% in Education and Training; and 9.0% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Greater Brisbane and New South Wales were:

  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (3.3% compared to 5.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (0.8% compared to 2.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Greater Brisbane increased by 234,175 between 2011 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2011 and 2021 in Greater Brisbane were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+65,679 persons)
  • Education and Training (+30,030 persons)
  • Construction (+23,198 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+22,079 persons)
