Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in South East Queensland in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a similar proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a higher proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 29.8% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 11.3% were one-parent families, compared with 29.7% and 10.5% respectively for Australia.

There were a lower proportion of lone person households and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 22.5% compared to 24.2% in Australia while the proportion of couples without children was 26.2% compared to 25.4% in Australia.

Emerging groups

The number of households in South East Queensland increased by 560,017 between 1996 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in South East Queensland between 1996 and 2021 were:

  • Couples without children (+156,541 households)
  • Couples with children (+139,383 households)
  • Lone person (+137,373 households)
  • One parent families (+71,115 households)
