Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Queensland in 2021 compared to Western Australia shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a higher proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 27.9% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 11.1% were one-parent families, compared with 30.2% and 10.0% respectively for Western Australia.

There were a lower proportion of lone person households and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 23.1% compared to 23.8% in Western Australia while the proportion of couples without children was 26.4% compared to 25.4% in Western Australia.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Queensland increased by 206,296 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Queensland between 2016 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+71,929 households)
  • Couples without children (+62,738 households)
  • Couples with children (+43,575 households)
  • One parent families (+29,380 households)
