Dominant groups
Analysis of the household/family types in Victoria in 2021 compared to Canberra shows that there was a similar proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a higher proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 30.9% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 10.2% were one-parent families, compared with 30.8% and 9.3% respectively for Canberra.
There were a similar proportion of lone person households and a lower proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 24.7% compared to 24.8% in Canberra while the proportion of couples without children was 24.6% compared to 25.8% in Canberra.

The number of households in Victoria increased by 915,961 between 1996 and 2021.
The largest changes in family/household types in Victoria between 1996 and 2021 were:
- Lone person (+263,178 households)
- Couples without children (+251,346 households)
- Couples with children (+184,018 households)
