Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Regional Australia in 2021 compared to Queensland shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a lower proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 24.6% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 10.5% were one-parent families, compared with 27.9% and 11.1% respectively for Queensland.

There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 25.5% compared to 23.1% in Queensland while the proportion of couples without children was 27.6% compared to 26.4% in Queensland.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Regional Australia increased by 680,911 between 2006 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Regional Australia between 2006 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+228,100 households)
  • Couples without children (+194,906 households)
  • Couples with children (+73,428 households)
  • One parent families (+73,035 households)
