Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Tasmania in 2021 compared to Greater Capital Cities shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a similar proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 24.0% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 11.1% were one-parent families, compared with 32.5% and 10.6% respectively for Greater Capital Cities.

There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 27.6% compared to 23.4% in Greater Capital Cities while the proportion of couples without children was 28.3% compared to 24.2% in Greater Capital Cities.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Tasmania increased by 48,261 between 2001 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Tasmania between 2001 and 2021 were:

  • Couples without children (+17,759 households)
  • Lone person (+16,012 households)
  • One parent families (+5,251 households)
  • Group household (+2,220 households)
