Dominant groups
Analysis of the household/family types in Greater Adelaide in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a higher proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 28.6% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 11.3% were one-parent families, compared with 29.7% and 10.5% respectively for Australia.
There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a similar proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 26.8% compared to 24.2% in Australia while the proportion of couples without children was 25.3% compared to 25.4% in Australia.

The number of households in Greater Adelaide increased by 128,815 between 1996 and 2021.
