Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Tasmania in 2021 compared to Western Australia shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a higher proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 24.0% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 11.1% were one-parent families, compared with 30.2% and 10.0% respectively for Western Australia.

There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 27.6% compared to 23.8% in Western Australia while the proportion of couples without children was 28.3% compared to 25.4% in Western Australia.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Tasmania increased by 40,368 between 2006 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Tasmania between 2006 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+14,444 households)
  • Couples without children (+13,670 households)
  • One parent families (+4,364 households)
  • Couples with children (+2,002 households)
