Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Tasmania in 2021 compared to Regional SA shows that there was a higher proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a higher proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 24.0% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 11.1% were one-parent families, compared with 21.2% and 9.0% respectively for Regional SA.

There were a lower proportion of lone person households and a lower proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 27.6% compared to 28.7% in Regional SA while the proportion of couples without children was 28.3% compared to 29.8% in Regional SA.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Tasmania increased by 54,224 between 1996 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Tasmania between 1996 and 2021 were:

  • Couples without children (+20,980 households)
  • Lone person (+20,927 households)
  • One parent families (+7,512 households)
  • Couples with children (-4,143 households)
