Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Greater Brisbane in 2021 compared to Regional QLD shows that there was a higher proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a higher proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 30.8% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 11.4% were one-parent families, compared with 25.2% and 10.8% respectively for Regional QLD.

There were a lower proportion of lone person households and a lower proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 22.7% compared to 23.4% in Regional QLD while the proportion of couples without children was 25.3% compared to 27.3% in Regional QLD.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Greater Brisbane increased by 327,559 between 2001 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Greater Brisbane between 2001 and 2021 were:

  • Couples without children (+87,857 households)
  • Couples with children (+87,203 households)
  • Lone person (+77,583 households)
