Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in South East Queensland in 2021 compared to New South Wales shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a higher proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 29.8% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 11.3% were one-parent families, compared with 30.8% and 10.6% respectively for New South Wales.

There were a lower proportion of lone person households and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 22.5% compared to 23.7% in New South Wales while the proportion of couples without children was 26.2% compared to 25.0% in New South Wales.

Emerging groups

The number of households in South East Queensland increased by 166,643 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in South East Queensland between 2016 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+55,251 households)
  • Couples without children (+49,747 households)
  • Couples with children (+43,021 households)
  • One parent families (+23,118 households)
