Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Greater Brisbane in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 19.3% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 14.8% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.2% and 17.2% respectively for Australia.
The major differences between the age structure of Greater Brisbane and Australia were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (6.9% compared to 6.2%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 65 to 69 (4.4% compared to 5.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 60 to 64 (5.1% compared to 5.8%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (4.0% compared to 4.6%)

From 1991 to 2021, Greater Brisbane's population increased by 1,128,203 people (81.5%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.01% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1991 and 2021 were in the age groups:
