In 2021, the largest age group in Canberra was 25 to 29 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 25 to 29 year olds, increasing by 14,716 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Canberra in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 18.3% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 13.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.2% and 17.2% respectively for Australia.

The major differences between the age structure of Canberra and Australia were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (8.6% compared to 7.0%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (7.5% compared to 6.2%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (8.5% compared to 7.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 60 to 64 (4.7% compared to 5.8%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Canberra's population increased by 143,901 people (46.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.92% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 25 to 29 (+14,716 persons)
  • 30 to 34 (+13,907 persons)
  • 35 to 39 (+12,873 persons)
