Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Regional NT in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 19.7% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 11.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.2% and 17.2% respectively for Australia.
The major differences between the age structure of Regional NT and Australia were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (8.6% compared to 7.0%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 85 and over (0.3% compared to 2.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 75 to 79 (1.5% compared to 3.2%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 80 to 84 (0.6% compared to 2.2%)
Emerging groups
From 2006 to 2021, Regional NT's population increased by 11,759 people (12.3%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.77% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 65 to 69 (+2,968 persons)
- 60 to 64 (+2,715 persons)
- 70 to 74 (+2,244 persons)
- 25 to 29 (+1,707 persons)
