In 2021, the largest age group in Western Australia was 35 to 39 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2006 was 65 to 69 year olds, increasing by 32,916 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the female five year age groups of Western Australia in 2021 compared to Greater Hobart shows that there was a higher proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 18.4% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 17.0% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 16.0% and 19.7% respectively for Greater Hobart.

The major differences between the female age structure of Western Australia and Greater Hobart were:

  • A larger percentage of females aged 0 to 4 (5.9% compared to 4.9%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 5 to 9 (6.3% compared to 5.5%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 40 to 44 (6.7% compared to 6.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 25 to 29 (6.6% compared to 7.9%)

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2021, Western Australia's female population increased by 355,185 people (36.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.07% per year over the period.

The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:
