Five year age groups present a classic age profile of the population. Each age group covers exactly five years, which enables direct comparison between each group.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the male five year age groups of Australia in 2021 compared to Greater Capital Cities shows that there was a similar proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 19.0% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 16.3% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 19.2% and 14.4% respectively for Greater Capital Cities.
The major differences between the male age structure of Australia and Greater Capital Cities were:
- A larger percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (4.5% compared to 3.9%)
- A larger percentage of males aged 65 to 69 (5.0% compared to 4.4%)
- A smaller percentage of males aged 35 to 39 (7.2% compared to 7.8%)
- A smaller percentage of males aged 30 to 34 (7.2% compared to 7.8%)
Emerging groups
From 2016 to 2021, Australia's male population increased by 998,520 people (8.6%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.67% per year over the period.
The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 70 to 74 (+129,958 males)
- 35 to 39 (+128,555 males)
- 10 to 14 (+98,958 males)
- 75 to 79 (+85,189 males)
