In 2021, the largest age group in Tasmania was 25 to 29 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 25 to 29 year olds, increasing by 5,487 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of Tasmania in 2021 compared to Regional Australia shows that there was a lower proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a similar proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.4% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 20.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.7% and 20.3% respectively for Regional Australia.

The major differences between the male age structure of Tasmania and Regional Australia were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 25 to 29 (7.2% compared to 6.0%)
  • A larger percentage of males aged 30 to 34 (6.9% compared to 6.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 5 to 9 (5.8% compared to 6.4%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Tasmania's male population increased by 24,298 people (9.7%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.88% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 25 to 29 (+5,487 males)
  • 30 to 34 (+4,539 males)
  • 70 to 74 (+3,642 males)
  • 35 to 39 (+3,338 males)
