Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Regional NSW was 60 to 64 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2011 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 58,585 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Regional NSW in 2021 compared to Regional Australia shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.9% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 22.0% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.8% and 21.0% respectively for Regional Australia.

There were no major differences between Regional NSW and Regional Australia in 2021.

Emerging groups

From 2011 to 2021, Regional NSW's population increased by 326,061 people (13.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.23% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2011 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+58,585 persons)
  • 65 to 69 (+46,417 persons)
  • 30 to 34 (+36,477 persons)
  • 75 to 79 (+35,982 persons)
