Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in South East Queensland was 35 to 39 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2006 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 42,997 people.

The Age Structure of South East Queensland provides key insights into the level of demand for age based services and facilities such as child care. It is also an indicator of South East Queensland's residential role and function and how it is likely to change in the future.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the female five year age groups of South East Queensland in 2021 compared to South Australia shows that there was a higher proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.7% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 17.0% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 16.3% and 21.3% respectively for South Australia.

The major differences between the female age structure of South East Queensland and South Australia were:

  • A smaller percentage of females aged 85 and over (2.2% compared to 3.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 65 to 69 (4.9% compared to 5.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 70 to 74 (4.5% compared to 5.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 60 to 64 (5.6% compared to 6.4%)

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2021, South East Queensland's female population increased by 465,137 people (34.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.97% per year over the period.

The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+42,997 females)
  • 65 to 69 (+40,972 females)
  • 25 to 29 (+37,710 females)
  • 60 to 64 (+37,160 females)
