Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in South East Queensland was 35 to 39 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 35 to 39 year olds, increasing by 19,996 people.

The Age Structure of South East Queensland provides key insights into the level of demand for age based services and facilities such as child care. It is also an indicator of South East Queensland's residential role and function and how it is likely to change in the future.

Five year age groups present a classic age profile of the population. Each age group covers exactly five years, which enables direct comparison between each group.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of South East Queensland in 2021 compared to Victoria shows that there was a higher proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a similar proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.6% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 15.3% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.8% and 15.7% respectively for Victoria.

The major differences between the male age structure of South East Queensland and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 10 to 14 (6.9% compared to 6.3%)
  • A larger percentage of males aged 15 to 19 (6.4% compared to 5.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 30 to 34 (7.1% compared to 7.6%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, South East Queensland's male population increased by 184,266 people (11.7%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.24% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 35 to 39 (+19,996 males)
  • 70 to 74 (+18,519 males)
  • 10 to 14 (+18,106 males)
  • 75 to 79 (+14,313 males)
