In 2021, the largest age group in Greater Sydney was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 60 to 64 year olds, increasing by 56,372 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of Greater Sydney in 2021 compared to Victoria shows that there was a similar proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.2% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 14.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.9% and 15.5% respectively for Victoria.

There were no major differences between Greater Sydney and Victoria in 2021.

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Greater Sydney's male population increased by 631,833 people (32.5%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.42% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:
