Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Greater Sydney in 2021 compared to Victoria shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 18.4% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 15.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.1% and 16.6% respectively for Victoria.
There were no major differences between Greater Sydney and Victoria in 2021.
Emerging groups
From 1996 to 2021, Greater Sydney's population increased by 1,504,553 people (40.6%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.37% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1996 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 55 to 59 (+138,980 persons)
- 60 to 64 (+137,961 persons)
- 50 to 54 (+114,164 persons)
- 35 to 39 (+113,088 persons)
