Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Regional Australia was 60 to 64 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 54,058 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of Regional Australia in 2021 compared to Victoria shows that there was a similar proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 18.7% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 20.3% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.8% and 15.7% respectively for Victoria.

The major differences between the male age structure of Regional Australia and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (5.7% compared to 4.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 30 to 34 (6.0% compared to 7.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 25 to 29 (6.0% compared to 7.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 35 to 39 (6.0% compared to 7.5%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Regional Australia's male population increased by 273,112 people (7.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.38% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+54,058 males)
  • 75 to 79 (+35,492 males)
  • 35 to 39 (+29,316 males)
  • 60 to 64 (+26,701 males)
