Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Regional NSW was 60 to 64 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 17,152 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of Regional NSW in 2021 compared to Victoria shows that there was a similar proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 18.6% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 21.4% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.8% and 15.7% respectively for Victoria.

The major differences between the male age structure of Regional NSW and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (5.9% compared to 4.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 30 to 34 (5.8% compared to 7.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 35 to 39 (5.8% compared to 7.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 25 to 29 (5.8% compared to 7.5%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Regional NSW's male population increased by 90,834 people (7.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.36% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+17,152 males)
  • 75 to 79 (+11,242 males)
  • 35 to 39 (+11,072 males)
  • 30 to 34 (+9,636 males)
