Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Regional NSW was 60 to 64 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 60 to 64 year olds, increasing by 80,033 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Regional NSW in 2021 compared to Greater Hobart shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.9% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 22.0% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 16.9% and 18.5% respectively for Greater Hobart.

The major differences between the age structure of Regional NSW and Greater Hobart were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (5.8% compared to 4.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (5.7% compared to 8.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (5.9% compared to 8.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (5.9% compared to 7.0%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Regional NSW's population increased by 477,762 people (20.2%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.92% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 60 to 64 (+80,033 persons)
  • 65 to 69 (+78,370 persons)
  • 70 to 74 (+69,180 persons)
  • 55 to 59 (+56,601 persons)
