Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Regional NSW in 2021 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 17.9% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 22.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.1% and 15.0% respectively for Greater Melbourne.
The major differences between the age structure of Regional NSW and Greater Melbourne were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (5.9% compared to 3.9%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (5.9% compared to 8.2%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (5.9% compared to 8.0%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (5.7% compared to 7.8%)
Emerging groups
From 2001 to 2021, Regional NSW's population increased by 507,810 people (21.9%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.99% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 60 to 64 (+81,637 persons)
- 65 to 69 (+81,233 persons)
- 70 to 74 (+71,712 persons)
- 55 to 59 (+57,252 persons)
