In 2021, the largest age group in South Australia was 25 to 29 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 10,718 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of South Australia in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a lower proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.8% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 18.6% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 19.2% and 14.1% respectively for Greater Sydney.

The major differences between the male age structure of South Australia and Greater Sydney were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (5.1% compared to 3.8%)
  • A larger percentage of males aged 65 to 69 (5.6% compared to 4.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 30 to 34 (6.7% compared to 7.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 35 to 39 (6.7% compared to 7.9%)
