In 2021, the largest age group in Greater Sydney was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 35 to 39 year olds, increasing by 30,986 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the female five year age groups of Greater Sydney in 2021 compared to Regional Australia shows that there was a similar proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.7% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 16.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.3% and 21.6% respectively for Regional Australia.

The major differences between the female age structure of Greater Sydney and Regional Australia were:

  • A larger percentage of females aged 30 to 34 (8.1% compared to 6.2%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 35 to 39 (7.9% compared to 6.2%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 25 to 29 (7.4% compared to 5.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 65 to 69 (4.7% compared to 6.2%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Greater Sydney's female population increased by 198,685 people (8.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.57% per year over the period.

The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 35 to 39 (+30,986 females)
  • 70 to 74 (+24,620 females)
  • 10 to 14 (+20,157 females)
  • 60 to 64 (+16,783 females)
