Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Greater Sydney in 2021 compared to Regional Australia shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 18.4% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 15.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.0% and 20.9% respectively for Regional Australia.
The major differences between the age structure of Greater Sydney and Regional Australia were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (8.0% compared to 6.1%)
- A larger percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (7.9% compared to 6.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 65 to 69 (4.5% compared to 6.2%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (3.9% compared to 5.7%)
Emerging groups
From 2011 to 2021, Greater Sydney's population increased by 839,504 people (19.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.76% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2011 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 30 to 34 (+81,683 persons)
- 35 to 39 (+78,765 persons)
- 70 to 74 (+75,635 persons)
- 65 to 69 (+65,777 persons)
