Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Greater Sydney in 2021 compared to Regional Australia shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 18.4% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 15.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.8% and 21.0% respectively for Regional Australia.
The major differences between the age structure of Greater Sydney and Regional Australia were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (8.0% compared to 6.1%)
- A larger percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (7.9% compared to 6.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 65 to 69 (4.5% compared to 6.3%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (3.9% compared to 5.7%)
Emerging groups
From 1991 to 2021, Greater Sydney's population increased by 1,712,410 people (49.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.34% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1991 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 55 to 59 (+157,509 persons)
- 50 to 54 (+148,235 persons)
- 35 to 39 (+143,777 persons)
- 60 to 64 (+129,601 persons)
