Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Regional NSW was 60 to 64 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 33,787 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Regional NSW in 2021 compared to Regional Australia shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.9% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 22.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.0% and 20.9% respectively for Regional Australia.

There were no major differences between Regional NSW and Regional Australia in 2021.

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Regional NSW's population increased by 186,115 people (7.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.37% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+33,787 persons)
  • 35 to 39 (+22,533 persons)
  • 75 to 79 (+21,589 persons)
  • 30 to 34 (+20,956 persons)
