In 2021, the largest age group in Greater Sydney was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2006 was 35 to 39 year olds, increasing by 48,818 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of Greater Sydney in 2021 compared to Regional TAS shows that there was a higher proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.2% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 14.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.1% and 22.2% respectively for Regional TAS.

The major differences between the male age structure of Greater Sydney and Regional TAS were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 35 to 39 (7.9% compared to 5.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 65 to 69 (4.3% compared to 6.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (3.8% compared to 6.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 60 to 64 (5.2% compared to 7.4%)

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2021, Greater Sydney's male population increased by 556,933 people (27.5%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.63% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 35 to 39 (+48,818 males)
  • 25 to 29 (+46,962 males)
  • 30 to 34 (+44,882 males)
  • 70 to 74 (+43,182 males)
