In 2021, the largest age group in New South Wales was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 38,437 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of New South Wales in 2021 compared to Regional VIC shows that there was a higher proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.0% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 16.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.3% and 21.6% respectively for Regional VIC.

The major differences between the male age structure of New South Wales and Regional VIC were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 35 to 39 (7.2% compared to 5.8%)
  • A larger percentage of males aged 30 to 34 (7.2% compared to 5.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 65 to 69 (5.0% compared to 6.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 70 to 74 (4.5% compared to 6.1%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, New South Wales's male population increased by 298,143 people (8.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.57% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+38,437 males)
  • 35 to 39 (+37,974 males)
  • 10 to 14 (+29,556 males)
  • 75 to 79 (+26,031 males)
