In 2021, the largest age group in Canberra was 25 to 29 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2006 was 25 to 29 year olds, increasing by 6,816 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the female five year age groups of Canberra in 2021 compared to Regional NSW shows that there was a similar proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.5% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 14.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.1% and 23.0% respectively for Regional NSW.

The major differences between the female age structure of Canberra and Regional NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of females aged 25 to 29 (8.5% compared to 5.6%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 30 to 34 (8.5% compared to 6.0%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 35 to 39 (8.2% compared to 5.9%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 20 to 24 (7.5% compared to 5.2%)

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2021, Canberra's female population increased by 65,832 people (40.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.27% per year over the period.

The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 25 to 29 (+6,816 females)
  • 30 to 34 (+6,770 females)
  • 35 to 39 (+6,340 females)
  • 70 to 74 (+5,223 females)
