In 2021, the largest age group in Greater Sydney was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 60 to 64 year olds, increasing by 65,592 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the female five year age groups of Greater Sydney in 2021 compared to Northern Territory shows that there was a lower proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.7% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 16.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 19.0% and 11.1% respectively for Northern Territory.

The major differences between the female age structure of Greater Sydney and Northern Territory were:

  • A larger percentage of females aged 85 and over (2.5% compared to 0.5%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 75 to 79 (2.9% compared to 1.5%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 80 to 84 (2.1% compared to 0.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 25 to 29 (7.4% compared to 9.0%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Greater Sydney's female population increased by 632,027 people (31.6%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.38% per year over the period.

The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 60 to 64 (+65,592 females)
  • 55 to 59 (+57,182 females)
  • 65 to 69 (+57,026 females)
  • 30 to 34 (+50,329 females)
