Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Greater Melbourne in 2021 compared to Queensland shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 18.2% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 14.9% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.6% and 17.4% respectively for Queensland.
The major differences between the age structure of Greater Melbourne and Queensland were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (8.3% compared to 6.8%)
- A larger percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (8.1% compared to 6.9%)

From 1991 to 2021, Greater Melbourne's population increased by 1,829,838 people (59.8%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.57% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1991 and 2021 were in the age groups:

- 50 to 54 (+157,084 persons)
- 55 to 59 (+147,924 persons)
