Dominant groups
Analysis of the female five year age groups of Tasmania in 2021 compared to Queensland shows that there was a lower proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 16.0% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 21.4% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.8% and 18.0% respectively for Queensland.
The major differences between the female age structure of Tasmania and Queensland were:
- A larger percentage of females aged 60 to 64 (6.9% compared to 5.9%)
- A larger percentage of females aged 65 to 69 (6.2% compared to 5.3%)
- A larger percentage of females aged 70 to 74 (5.6% compared to 4.8%)
- A smaller percentage of females aged 20 to 24 (5.4% compared to 6.1%)
Emerging groups
From 1991 to 2021, Tasmania's female population increased by 52,676 people (23.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.69% per year over the period.
The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 1991 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 60 to 64 (+10,104 females)
- 55 to 59 (+9,476 females)
- 65 to 69 (+8,386 females)
- 70 to 74 (+8,180 females)
