Dominant groups
Analysis of the family blending in South East Queensland in 2021 compared to Regional SA shows that there was a higher proportion of step families as well as a higher proportion of blended families. Overall, 10.1% of total couple families with children were step families, and 4.2% were blended families, compared with 7.9% and 5.5% respectively for Regional SA.
There were a lower proportion of other families and a similar proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of other families was 0.5% compared to 1.1% in Regional SA while the proportion of intact families was 85.3% compared to 85.5% in Regional SA.
Emerging groups
The number of couple families with children in South East Queensland increased by 43,866 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in family blending in South East Queensland between 2016 and 2021 were:
- Intact Family (+29,802 couples with children)
- Step family (+13,199 couples with children)
- Blended family (+574 couples with children)
- Other couple family (+291 couples with children)
