Dominant groups
Analysis of the share of the population attending educational institutions in Tasmania in 2021 compared to Regional NT shows that there was a lower proportion attending primary school, a similar proportion attending secondary school, and a higher proportion engaged in tertiary level education.
Overall, 8.1% of the population were attending primary school, 5.8% of the population were attending secondary institutions, and 6.2% were learning at a tertiary level, compared with 10.2%, 5.5% and 3.4% respectively for Regional NT.
The major differences between the share of the population attending learning institutions in Tasmania and Regional NT were:
- A larger percentage of persons not attending (72.3% compared to 67.3%)
- A larger percentage of persons attending University (3.6% compared to 2.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons attending a Government primary school (5.7% compared to 8.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons attending a primary school (any type) (8.1% compared to 10.2%)
Emerging groups
From 2016 to 2021, Tasmania's population increased by 47,600 people (+9.3%). This represents an average annual change of 1.8% per year over the period.
The largest changes in the number of persons attending education institutions in Tasmania, between 2016 and 2021 were in those who nominated:
- TAFE/Vocational (+4,135 persons)
- Pre-school (+2,756 persons)
- Secondary school (+2,688 persons)
- University (+1,615 persons)
