Dominant groups

In 2021, there were 224,567 separate houses in the area, 28,006 medium density dwellings, and 2,477 high density dwellings.

Analysis of the types of dwellings in Tasmania in 2021 shows that 86.8% of all dwellings were separate houses; 10.8% were medium density dwellings, and 1.0% were in high density dwellings, compared with 71.9%, 16.2%, and 9.7% in the Queensland respectively.

In 2021, a total of 93.8% of the dwellings in Tasmania were occupied on Census night, compared to 91.0% in Queensland. The proportion of unoccupied dwellings was 6.0%, which is smaller compared to that found in Queensland (8.8%).

The total number of dwellings in Tasmania increased by 97,247 between 2001 and 2021.

The largest changes in the type of dwellings found in Tasmania between 2001 and 2021 were:
