Dominant groups

Analysis of the service age groups of Eastern Highlands in 2021 compared to Manilla and District shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 21.7% of the population was aged between 0 and 17, and 31.1% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 19.2% and 34.2% respectively for Manilla and District.

The major differences between the age structure of Eastern Highlands and Manilla and District were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Older workers & pre-retirees' (16.6% compared to 13.6%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees' (17.4% compared to 15.1%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Secondary schoolers' (8.6% compared to 6.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Seniors' (11.7% compared to 16.4%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Eastern Highlands's population decreased by 128 people (5.2%). This represents an average annual population change of -0.27% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69) (+182 people)
  • Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (-179 people)
  • Seniors (70 to 84) (+120 people)
  • Young workforce (25 to 34) (-96 people)
