This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Sheldon's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Sheldon in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (123 females or 28.3%)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (123 females or 28.3%)
- Community and Personal Service Workers (50 females or 11.5%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 296 females in total or 68.2% of the employed female resident population.
In comparison, Redland Bay employed 20.7% in Professionals; 26.6% in Clerical and Administrative Workers; and 17.7% in Community and Personal Service Workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Sheldon and Redland Bay were:
- A larger percentage of females employed as Professionals (28.3% compared to 20.7%)
- A larger percentage of females employed as Clerical and Administrative Workers (28.3% compared to 26.6%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (11.5% compared to 17.7%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed as Labourers (3.5% compared to 6.3%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed females in Sheldon increased by 30 between 2016 and 2021.
There were no major differences in Sheldon between 2016 and 2021.
