Dominant groups
Analysis of the language spoken at home by children aged 5 to 11 years in the City of Melton in 2021 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).
Overall, 59.2% of children aged 5 to 11 years spoke English only, and 34.8% of% spoke a non-English language, compared with 63.2% and 32.0% respectively for Greater Melbourne.
Other than English, the dominant language spoken at home by children aged 5 to 11 years in the City of Melton was Punjabi, with 7.3% of the population, or 1,526 people speaking this language at home.
