Melton West is bounded by Hardys Road, Harkness Road, a line running continuous of Sovereign Boulevard, Sovereign Boulevard, Bulmans Road and Centenary Avenue in the north, Coburns Road in the east, the Western Freeway in the south, and the Djerriwarrh Creek in the west.
Melton West is named for the area west of Melton, which was named after Melton Mowbray, an English town renowned for its fox hunting and coursing.

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with growth in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Significant residential development did not occur until the late 1960s. Rapid growth took place during the 1970s and early 1980s. Gradual growth continued from the early 1990s as new dwellings continued to be added to the area.
Melton West includes residential areas in the east, rural areas in the west, and commercial areas in the south-east.
