Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, when the township was established as a stopping place on the road to the Bendigo goldfields. Land was used mainly for pastoral and agricultural purposes. The township grew in the 1870s and 1880s. The most significant development occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. The population increased gradually during the 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area, and then declined slightly between 2001 and 2011 as few new dwellings were added and the average number of persons living in each dwelling declined.
Diggers Rest is a predominantly rural area, with urban areas in the township. Rural land is used mainly for farming and horse studs.
Major features of the area include Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve, Norm Raven Reserve, Stan Payne Reserve, Houdini's Flight Monument, Diggers Rest Community Hall and one school.
