Caroline Springs is bounded by the locality of Hillside in the north, Gourlay Road, Taylors Road, Westwood Drive, Sullivan Terrace, Weekes Drive, Fydler Avenue, Rockbank Middle Road, Riley Court, Goulburn Circuit, Creekbank Place, McQuillan Way, Roycroft Avenue, Castlemaine Way, Chisholm Drive and Diggers Place in the east, the Western Highway in the south, and Clarke Road, Monaghans Road, Taylors Road and the locality of Fraser Rise in the west.
Caroline Springs is named after Caroline Chisholm who established a series of shelters in the area to provide accommodation along the route to the goldfields.

Development of the area commenced in the late 1990s with the construction of the Delfin Caroline Springs estate. Rapid growth occurred from 1999, with the population quadrupling between 2001 and 2006 as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area. Rapid population and housing growth continued between 2006 and 2011. Growth is expected to continue.
Caroline Springs is a recent and rapidly developing residential area, with some commercial areas.
